Merchant Account Glossary: Debit Card, PIN, Issuing Bank

    

Debit Card

A financial instrument used by consumers in place of cash. Unlike a credit card, debit card purchases are deducted automatically from the cardholder's account.

 

PIN (personal identification number)

A personal identification number is used by an ATM or debit card holder to authenticate card ownership for transactions. The cardholder must enter the correct PIN into a PIN pad or touch-screen to complete the transaction

  

Issuing Bank

This is the bank that maintains the consumer's credit card account and pays out to the merchant's account upon a credit card purchase.
